THE GUIDE TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL
FIELDWORK OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE THE UK |
Archaeology Abroad is based at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, and was first published in 1972. The Archaeology Abroad Bulletin comes out annually in spring and provides information about hundreds of varied and exciting archaeological fieldwork opportunities outside the UK suitable for all pockets, archaeological interests and levels of experience. In addition to excavation and field school listings, bulletins also include illustrated feature articles, reports and dig reviews by Fieldwork Award recipients, comprehensive guidance notes and advice about joining a dig abroad, plus extensive information sections on a wide range of relevant organisations, societies, publications, scholarships and awards
Archaeology Abroad is currently produced as a pdf file on CD ROM, a format which has made it possible to expand and improve bulletin content significantly in recent years, and which provides readers with direct access to further information about all listings via live email and web site links. The CD ROM carries full loading instructions and is easy to use and navigate.
Archaeology Abroad Email Updates is a new service which supplements the annual bulletin and provides subscribers with up-to-date information about archaeological excavation and field school opportunities on an occasional basis throughout the year.
Archaeology Abroad Fieldwork Awards are available annually to help subscribers meet their dig expenses. All subscribers are eligible to apply irrespective of nationality, age or level of previous fieldwork experience, if any. Awards given range between £100–£200 and are intended as a contribution towards travel expenses, participation or field school fees, or to help pay for other appropriate excavation-related expenses, such as equipment. Excavation projects or field schools applied for must be listed in either the annual edition of Archaeology Abroad or in an Archaeology Abroad Email Update. Successful applicants are required to write a report about their dig experiences which may be published in a future edition of Archaeology Abroad. Notes for Applicants and an Application Form are circulated to subscribers with the annual edition of Archaeology Abroad or can be obtained from the Archaeology Abroad office.
Archaeology Abroad also produces an occasional series of Fact Sheets providing information about archaeological fieldwork in selected countries, some of which seldom feature in the bulletin. Those currently available cover the countries of Southern and Eastern Asia, Germany and The Netherlands. Digging Abroad in a Gap Year provides useful information for those considering digging as a gap year option. Fact sheets are free and can be obtained by sending a large self-addressed envelope to Archaeology Abroad.
