ARCHAEOLOGY ABROAD

FIELDWORK AWARDS

Archaeology Abroad offers all Individual Subscribers the opportunity to apply for a Fieldwork Award of up to a maximum of £500 to help meet the cost of joining one of the many interesting and exciting excavation projects or field schools listed in the annual bulletin or in an Archaeology Abroad Email Update. Fieldwork Awards can be used to help pay travel expenses, put towards participation or field school fees, or used for other appropriate dig expenses. Awards made in recent years have helped subscribers to take part in a wide range of archaeological projects around the world - from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece to Canada, the USA, Israel, Tanzania and South Africa.

Applying for a Fieldwork Award

Fieldwork Award applications are invited for excavation projects or field schools listed in the 2007 edition of Archaeology Abroad or in an Archaeology Abroad Email Update. An application form is enclosed with each copy of the bulletin. Additional copies are available from Archaeology Abroad. All Individual Subscribers are eligible to apply regardless of age, nationality or level of archaeological experience. A separate application form must be submitted for each project applied for up to a maximum of two per subscriber.

There are no closing dates for applications, but you are urged to submit your application form as soon as possible as funds are limited and may be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are judged promptly and on merit by a panel of experts. Successful applicants are notified as soon as possible in advance of their chosen excavation, although in certain circumstances it has been possible for funds to be paid retrospectively. Awards can be used only for the project applied for and are not transferable. In the event that a successful applicant is unable to take up their place on the project for which they have been awarded funding, they will be required to repay the award in full to Archaeology Abroad.

Following their period of fieldwork, Award recipients must prepare a short report about their experiences which may be published in a future volume of Archaeology Abroad. Fieldwork Award recipients may not re-apply for 12 months following receipt of their Award.
