The British Archaeological Association

Study Days

The Association has recently initiated a series of study days to provide an opportunity for a small group to meet at a building to discuss particular themes and problems under the guidance of experts.

The BAA is committed to running two study days a year - one in Spring and one in Autumn - and holds out hopes it may be possible to run additional continental study days in conjunction with exhibitions in the future.

Highly successful visits have been made to the White Tower in the Tower of London (June 2008) to look at recent archaeological discoveries, and to Bosham church in Sussex (March 2009) to look at stone types employed in the building and their relation to the building history. Also in 2009, a study day was held at Lincoln cathedral (Oct 2009) to examine the woodwork of the choir stalls and the timberwork of the twelfth-century roofs.

The most recent study days were concerned with Medieval wall paintings in Shorthampton church in Oxfordshire (May 2010), Romanesque painting, sculpture and architecture at Cluny (Sept 2010) and medieval worked stones at Atcham (October 2010).

The next Study Day . . .

The next study day will be devoted to stained glass and will take place in York on Saturday, 16 April 2011. Information will be sent out to members in early 2011.
