Fieldwork

Sheriffside, East Lothian
6.4.12–9.4.12
A cropmark enclosure at Sheriffside, Gifford in East Lothian (NMRS NT56NE 43), was first identified in 1981 as a double ditched enclosure. It was unclear how Sheriffside related to the various other enclosures across the northern edge of the Lammermuir hills. Given this, the site was targeted for research. In May 2011, Rampart Scotland undertook a programme of geophysical survey and evaluation to characterise and date the enclosure. In the event, excavation revealed that the site did not comprise an enclosure but rather a platform settlement dating to the closing centuries BC and early 1st century AD. From the limited excavations in 2011 it is still not clear if there is in fact an enclosure on the site, and if there is, it may have been superseded by the platform settlement. However, the only way to determine this is to continue the investigations. No accommodation is provided and you will have to make your own way to site. However, the landowner has kindly agreed to allow camping in the field near the site, although there will be no facilities except a portaloo. Please bring a packed lunch. Advance booking is necessary as places are strictly limited. Day fees 10GBP. For more information contact David Connolly at Past Horizons, Old Schoolrooms, Luggate Burn, East Lothian EH41 4QA, tel 01620 861643, email info@bajr.org, web www.rampartscotland.co.uk. . Currently one of the largest archaeological projects in Britain on-going work encompasses multiple sites and a wide range of historical and archaeological techniques, from large-scale open area excavation and exploratory test pitting to map regression and standing building survey. The Project is an exercise in democratic archaeology, believing that all those who participate have an equal say how the project is run, and we are strongly rooted in the local community, whose heritage we are engaged in studying and whose participation we encourage. Archaeological fieldwork is concentrated in a six week summer season but additional activities such as field walking take place at other times of the year. Volunteers are welcome and often no previous experience of archaeology is necessary as on-site training courses are run every week during the excavation as well as a wide array of other specialised training courses.
