Discussion
This web page was added for a number of reasons:
Alverstone is a site of national importance and it is hoped that this brief introduction will be enough to bring it to the attention of a wider audience.
Alverstone is in serious need of funding in order to get the post ex work started. Island 2000 Trust has been instrumental in attracting funding to date with donations from national bodies such as English Heritage and the Enviroment Agency, local buisnesses and even the public. More is needed and Island 2000 Trust would be pleased to hear from you.
Alverstone has presented many questions and it is hoped that people will open discussions about it.
Some points are:
What is the wand and are there parallels.
If the cobble phase of the causeway is Roman, which seems likley, then the construction of the road way is unusual. This is probably as a result of it having bridged marshy ground at this point. Are there any excavation records of Roman roads through a marshes that can be used for comparison?
It has been suggested by some of the locals on the excavation team that; Isle of Wight has no known Roman Military presence. Is this the case? If so then the military equipment found at Alverstone would tend to provide a rather interesting senario.
