Ancient Cwmbran Society
The Ancient Cwmbran Society is an offshoot of the Ancient Cwmbran and the Cistercians Project, which aims to investigate several sites of archaeological interest in the Thornhill and Greenmeadow areas of Cwmbran over a 12 month period. This work has been carried out with volunteers from the community. The project will also celebrate the medieval pilgrim heritage of the area through a complimentary art project, to produce an effigy of St Derfel, a medieval crop growing project and the production of a circular heritage walk leaflet for the area.
Cwmbran is a new town established in 1949 to provide new employment opportunities in the south eastern portion of the South Wales Coalfield.
There is growing evidence that Neolithic and Bronze Age people used the area, and through our research we believe we live in an historically important area, we are seeking to preserve this heritage and boost the tourism to our town and surrounding areas.

There is a Project Showcase Event, taking place on the 20/3/2011. This event will close the first stages of the project, and offer a chance to see what we have discovered about our town. Please see the website for details.
