The Caer Alyn Archaeological and Heritage Project

Background

The area is historically and geographically important because it is situated between the low-lying Cheshire plains to the east and the Welsh hills and mountains to the west. Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Welsh and Normans have fought over this border zone for millennia. It is most likely that the promontory was fortified in the Iron Age, when a growing population had to battle for control of diminishing resources in a deteriorating climate; if it was, the fort would probably have been used by the Deceangli tribe, which controlled what is now north-east Wales at the time of the Roman invasion. However, no one as yet can say with certainty when the fort was built, as it is a scheduled monument and has never been excavated. It may well have been used sporadically over many centuries, for many different purposes and by many different people.





The purpose of this project is to undertake a full and detailed survey of areas of potential interest that were identified during the research for the Time Team Big Dig. The research during this project identified that although much has been discovered regarding the Iron Age promontory fort, little further work has been carried out in the surrounding landscape. The documentary research has highlighted other potential sites that would benefit from a full survey. The findings obtained from maps and documents indicate occupation from the Bronze Age through to the Modern period, except for Roman and sub Roman. During building work on another part of the site Roman coins have been found. However, they were not in any context and no record of them was kept. They have subsequently been lost. The local area has many sites, Gresford, Holt and Chester, from the Roman period that have all produced artifacts from throughout the Roman occupation.
