Scotland's Rural Past Training session at Scotland Mar Lodge
Would you like to take part in a 2-day archaeological interpretation and field survey workshop with Scotland's Rural Past (SRP)?
SRP is a five-year, nationwide project hosted by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. Since October 2006 the SRP team has been working with local communities, schools, Young Archaeologists' Clubs and other heritage organisations across Scotland to research, record and raise awareness of their rural past. Previous outreach work with the public and younger audiences has seen a variety of investigations of abandoned crofts and farmsteads through a range of engaging archaeological activities, including aerial photography with kites and surveying features with GPS. These activities have helped the public discover how people used to live in the countryside, find out how archaeologists work, and have fun at the same time!
There are thousands of deserted rural settlements across Scotland and many are ideal sites to visit with members of the public. In order to encourage use of this fantastic archaeological resource, support the training of YAC leaders and rangers, and encourage more people to appreciate the rural historic environment, SRP would like to offer the opportunity to learn new or refresh your existing archaeological skills at a 2 day workshop on 6-7 August 2010.
Based at the National Trust for Scotland Mar Lodge near Braemar, we will visit and use one of the townships on the NTS estate as a case study.
