Heritage Link Diversity Programme

North East Interactive Forum Event: Embracing Difference

Wednesday 28th March 2007, in Hartlepool Museum.

Heritage Link's exciting two year programme to support heritage organisations in reaching out to new audiences was launched on 1st September 2006. The programme aims to build capacity in the voluntary sector, its regional and local organisations including Civic Trusts, Historic Houses Association members, CPRE, small museums and others. The outcome of the whole programme will be a number of diversity projects to stand as models for the sector.

The second of 6 regional Embracing Difference workshops will be held in The Tees Valley on March 28th at the Hartlepool Historic Quay, part of Hartlepool's Maritime Experience. It will be hosted by the award winning Hartlepool Arts and Museums Service, and is supported by Renaissance in the Regions. It will be a highly interactive day and an exciting opportunity to pool inspirational ideas about engaging with different communities and groups, and to generate ideas that may lead on to diversity projects.

Heritage in all its forms offers tremendous scope for engaging with people who may not traditionally have seen it as having something to offer them, and smaller organisations may especially benefit from an opportunity to take part in a dialogue about reaching out to marginalised groups and individuals and responding to their needs. Our programme acknowledges that we are increasingly living in a society with people of differing cultures, faiths and ethnic backgrounds, and that diversity also includes gender, sexuality, the old and young, individuals and groups with special needs, socially excluded people, such as asylum seekers and the homeless, and those on low incomes. The forum will be an opportunity to "think out of the box" about developing projects through for example educational, social, cultural, business, and other creative partnerships.

We particularly wish to encourage smaller voluntary heritage organisations, and bursaries for travel may be available. Prior experience of diversity projects is not assumed but participants are encouraged to bring ideas for discussion. Places are limited to 35 and we are expecting a high level of interest. The forum will not be suitable for those unable to commit to a full day.
The Heritage Link Diversity Programme is supported by English Heritage
