Community Archaeology - Burgage Earthworks project (Southwell, Nottinghamshire)

The Burgage Earthworks project is a year-long community archaeology project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's All Our Stories programme.

We are working with the Southwell Archaeology group and providing training and support for group members in historical research, archaeological surveying, test-pit excavations and Finds Analysis sessions in order to explore the area of the Burgage Green in Southwell.

Antiquarian plans suggest the site is part of an Iron Age hillfort and old maps mark it as a Roman Camp, yet no fieldwork has ever been done on the site. We aim to investigate the site and see what we can find out.

Community Archaeology - Elmton Research Project (Elmton, Derbyshire)

The Elmton Research Project is a five-year community archaeology project based at Creswell Crags on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border and is part of the Limestone Journeys project.

The project is funded by Creswell Heritage Trust through the Heritage Lottery Fund, and sees volunteers trained in archaeological fieldwork techniques.

We are currently in year three of the project, and have been investigating the village of Elmton looking for the Medieval village. So far we have carried out landscape surveys, fieldwalking, geophysics and small-scale excavations and will be continuing with these methods over the next two years.

The project won Best Volunteer Project for the District of Bolsover in 2011.

The group have also worked on three earthwork enclosures at Whitwell Woods, Derbyshire in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, in order to assess and record the archaeological remains there, and make suggestions towards future heritage management at the site. A report of the first season of work can be found at:
