Methodology

A community archaeology project, just like any archaeological project, should be carried out with a well thought-out methodology in mind. In terms of the methods used, these will vary a great deal according to the nature of the physical remains you are investigating, but in general terms the following will prove useful:

Alcock, N.W., Barley, M.W., Dixon, P.W. & Meeson, R.A., illustrations by Meeson, R.A. (1996) Recording Timber Framed Buildings: An Illustrated Glossary (Revised edition). York: Council for British Archaeology

Barker, P. (1993) Techniques of Archaeological Excavation. London: Batsford

Cocke, T., Finley, D., Halsey, R., Williamson, E. with drawings by Wilson, G. & Rust, D. (1996) Recording a Church: An Illustrated Glossary (Revised edition). York: Council for British Archaeology

Coles, J. (2001) Digging up the Past: An Introduction to Archaeological Excavation. Stroud: Sutton

Currie, C. (2004) Garden Archaeology: A Handbook. York: Council for British Archaeology

Greene, K. (2002) Archaeology: An Introduction. London: Routledge.

Mytum, H. (2000) Recording and Analysing Graveyards. York: Council for British Archaeology

O'Connor, T. & Evans, J.G. (2005) Environmental Archaeology: Principles and Methods. Stroud: Sutton

Parsons, D. (1998) Churches and Chapels: Investigating Places of Worship (Revised edition). York: Council for British Archaeology.

Renfrew, A.C. and P. Bahn (2004) Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice. London: Thames and Hudson
