Past Horizons - Adventures in Archaeology

Past Horizons Volunteer Archaeology Website

Past Horizons Magazine Past Horizons has been created to enable people whether amateur or professional to participate in archaeological projects around the world. Some of the projects require no archaeological experience to participate but you will work with professionals who will provide guidance on a daily basis. Other projects are mainly for student participation where academic credits can be obtained and others are for professionals only.

So, if you just want to do something different with your holidays or have a sabbatical to take, have a look and see if there is something that appeals to you, there is something to suit all budgets. If you want to ask us about what it is like to go on an archaeological dig please feel free to get in touch as we have been on many digs around the world from Jordan - Georgia – Thailand. You might also like to ask members of the forum what their experiences have been or even make arrangements with people going on the same dig.

Past Horizons was created by husband and wife team, David Connolly and Maggie Struckmeier. David is a professional archaeologist with 25 years experience working mainly in the Arab Emirates, Iraq, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Jordan. Seven years ago he set up his own highly successful website BAJR which provides invaluable information about archaeology and archaeological jobs in the UK.

Maggie’s background is in buying oriental rugs and furniture in Iran, Turkey, India and Morocco for a company in Scotland and while having no formal training in archaeology often accompanies David to work on projects both in the UK and around the world.

David and Maggie realise that there are many people who would like to participate in archaeology but do not know who to ask or how to go about getting involved. Past Horizons was created to help put people in touch with projects around the world and hopefully produce a community of enthusiasts who will participate year after year and might be willing to discuss and share each others experiences.

The Magazine is an online free journal in Volunteer Archaeology, designed to inspire and promote volunteer archaeology, from Brislington to Timbuktu!

Getting involved in archaeology is now just a matter of taking that first step.
