Quarley Down Ancient Environs Project

The site is near Quarley Down, on the Hampshire Wiltshire border, and work so far has shown occupation from the Early Bronze age through to the Iron Age and beyond.

The name of the project is the Quarley Down Ancient Environs Project (QDAEP) and our aim is to investigate the local environment to build a picture of pre-historic and historic occupation and activity.

Preliminary excavation, followed the finding of Bronze Age artefacts, has revealed a small enclosure cut in to the chalk, probably indicating a circular hedge with a round house inside the enclosure.

The project is in planning stage as at the moment (December 2009), but the intention through to summer 2010 is to survey the area around the finds, and to look at the human occupation of the area, near to Quarley Hillfort, over the prehistoric and historic period.

The project is under the direction of a professional Archaeologist, in her spare time and is entirely voluntary with volunteer labour from both new and experienced diggers.

As an independent project it will offer the opportunity to take part in:

Excavation – from end of March to September 2010

Field Walking – as and when fields are ploughed

Woodland archaeology – during Jan-Mar 2010 when foliage has died back
