East Lothian Council and Archaeology Scotland are excited to announce the finalised programme for the first national Scottish Community Archaeology Conference, to be held over a weekend on the 16th and 17th of May 2009 at Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh. Opening remarks will be given by Mike Russell, Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution.
This is not only a celebration of community projects in Scotland, but a chance for volunteers from all over the country to share experiences with one another, and with those who work full time as archaeologists, interpreters, or fundraisers. There will be a series of workshops where volunteers and professionals can share ideas and find solutions to problems, and there will be a large exhibition featuring community projects and heritage organisations.
This conference is sponsored by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, The Robert Kiln Charitable Trust, The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and ALGAO:Scotland.
For more information please contact Helen Bradley h.bradley@scottisharchaeology.org.uk∞. Booking information will be available shortly at www.eastlothian.gov.uk/archaeology∞

East Lothian Council and Archaeology Scotland will host a Scottish Community Archaeology Conference in East Lothian (Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre). Papers will provide a snap shot of community projects both from East Lothian and across the rest of Scotland.
The aim is to reflect the diversity of community archaeology in Scotland, offering participants a representative slice through current projects. The second day of the conference will feature practical workshops on how to develop a successful community project.
At this stage the organisers are calling for suggested workshop themes to ensure that sessions will cover areas where participants would most like to develop their understanding. Suggestions include applying for funding; access issues, landowner liability; maintaining project momentum and keeping volunteers.
The conference is also open to any group or individual who wishes to display information about their project, so to note interest in contributing a display/stand or to notify of workshop ideas please contact Biddy Simpson at bsimpson1@eastlothian.gov.uk∞ or Helen Bradley h.bradley@scottisharchaeology.org.uk∞.
