Shorne Woods Community Project

From 3rd July to 1st of August 2010, volunteers, school and youth groups, led by Kent County Council archaeologists, are excavating within Shorne Woods Country Park.
The park is just north of the A2 between Rochester and Gravesend and hides a medieval manor house deep in its woods. Nothing survives above ground of the manor's buildings, but the buried foundations are extensive. The buildings stand on an artificially levelled plateau about 40 x 65 metres in size, with a series of fish ponds running down the slope alongside.

This is the fifth year anniversary of excavations on the site!

So far we have uncovered the manor's kitchen with a fantastic stone hearth, a bakehouse, two main buildings and one Lord's toilet!

The project runs until spring 2011 and future investigations will examine the prehistoric, military and industrial archaeology of the Park!
