SCEP presently operates on an entirely volunteer basis, and is run by the South Somerset Archaeology Research Group (see link below). Generally the project carries out field work and excavation between 1 April and 31 October each year. From November to March we work indoors on important work processing and analysing a variety of finds and preparing information for publication.

SCEP presently operates on an entirely volunteer basis, run by the people who provide the elbow grease, but aiming to retain a rigorous and high quality approach to archaeological and landscape research. Volunteers are offered the opportunity to participate in a number of archaeological field and excavation techniques as well as taking responsibility for post excavation tasks through to publication. Our ethos is to share experience and enable people to learn new skills, so training will be given which will be tailored to how long and how much time you are able to commit to the project. Generally the project carries out field work and excavation between 1 April and 31 October each year. From November to March we work indoors on important work processing and analysing a variety of finds and preparing information for publication.

SCEP is now well down the road of transforming itself from a funded organisation to a non-profit volunteer organisation, while maintaining high professional standards. It is showing itself capable of maintaining a useful and focused programme of work.

The activities this year have included:-

Reorganisation of SCEP and their premises.
Finds analysis tasks (virtually up to date).
General post-excavation tasks.
Geophysics surveying at Sutton Montis and Hazelgrove School.
Primary geophysics and excavation support to an investigation at Sparkford.
Primary geophysics and test pitting support to an investigation of Roman salt works.
SCEP's own excavation at Crissels Green (early bronze age barrow).
Holding "Cadbury Day" with presentation of papers, poster boards and finds displays.

Planned activities over the winter include:-

Post-excavation work and reporting of the Crissels Green excavation.
Continue surveying, test pitting and reporting (subject to permissions).
Working to clear the inherited backlog of excavation reports.

How to join in
You can join in with any of our activities, regardless of your experience or lack of it. We work year round, currently on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with longer continuous periods during excavations. We welcome equally retired professors of archaeology, and complete beginners, but it helps to know what sort of background or interests you have, and whether there is something you would particularly like to do, or feel that you might not be able to manage. You can come along for a block of time or on a day a week basis, whatever suits you.

SOUTH CADBURY ENVIRONS PROJECT

The South Cadbury Environs Project (SCEP) was originally started in the early 1990s to look at the area immediately around South Cadbury hillfort (Somerset, UK). It was intended to put the Iron Age hillfort and the other archaeology on the hill in context. Prompted by the publication of the late 1960s excavations carried out by Leslie Alcock, a programme was devised looking at the wider landscape using a variety of techniques, but based primarily on geophysical survey using a gradiometer, plough zone sampling and test pits. In some cases findings were then followed up with larger excavations, providing many exciting and unique landscape features.
