South Somerset Archaeological Research Group

The South Somerset Archaeological Research Group (SSARG) is an umbrella organisation that undertakes archaeological projects in southern Somerset. Some are run entirely in-house while others are collaborative projects with other local archaeological and historical organisations.

We have carried out geophysical surveys and supported Newcastle University training digs around Lufton Roman villa. We have carried out a geophysics project at Lytes Cary with the National Trust Volunteers, assisted the Martock Local History Society with excavations at a Roman Site and various other local initiatives under the SSARG umbrella. We also conduct excavations and surveys in support of our own research agenda. The long-running and successful South Cadbury Environs Project continues its archaeological investigation of the zone around South Cadbury Hillfort.

SSARG aims to give a wide range of opportunities to volunteer members in the South Somerset region and beyond (we have members as far afield as Australia). We accept volunteers of all levels of experience, including complete beginners. We provide training as required and encourage volunteers to expand their capabilities. We also provide a programme of workshop sessions, talks, visits and social events.

The South Somerset Archaeological Research Group has been formed as a result of the merger of the South Cadbury Environs Project (SCEP) and the South East Somerset Archaeology Society (SESAS). The new organisation reflects our expanded role in Somerset archaeology.
