This is an old revision of SouthernBrooksArchaeology from 2010-06-16 14:25:46.Southern Brooks Archaeology are a newly formed local archaeology group that includes members of the local history societies of Patchway, Filton, Bradley Stoke and Stoke Gifford in South Gloucestershire.
We are just embarking on a project involving geophysical surveys of two sites in South Gloucestershire. The first of these is at Little Stoke Park, where historical research by Dr Martin Davis has traced the history of the farm that once stood there and the potential medieval (or perhaps earlier) occupation of the site. Resistance surveys will be undertaken to locate the presence of the past farmstead and any other archaeological information from the site.
Further to this we will also be conducting surveys on a site called 40 Acres in Bradley Stoke, next to a site on which was a Roman Villa. Excavations conducted in 1977 revealed the Roman building, but little is known of the surrouding area.
One of our key goals is to highlight the wealth of history that survives as archaeology and physical remains within a built up and modern area. Although heavily developed these areas still retain historic features such as saxon field boundaries embedded in the modern town layout.
