Stirchley Slag Works

In March 2012 NexusHeritage delivered a community archaeology workshop at the Stirchley Slag Works, in TelfordTownPark. This followed on from earlier work at Hinkshay and the StirchleyFurnaces.

After the decline of the Stirchley Furnaces in the late ninteenth century, the slag heaps were mined by several companies. The slag was crushed and used for roadstone, and as aggregate in concrete - and, later, Tarmac.

The archaeological project involved:

- clearance of a slag crushing plant

- excavation and recording of the slag crusher

- landscape survey of the broader slag works complex

The community archaeology programme has involved members of the Dawley History Society, the Wrekin Historical Group and the Wrekin Local Studies Forum.
