About the CBA

The CBA is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

They have a wealth of information, news and resources on their website: www.britarch.ac.uk

The CBA has a large membership base of individuals and organisations, and it is through our vital membership income that we are able to carry out the work we do to make archaeology accessible for everyone and to ensure that archaeological heritage is at the top of the government's agenda. The CBA network across England is made up of 12 regional CBA groups, of which CBA London is one. Membership of one of these groups comes automatically with CBA membership (which starts from just £29). To find out more about joining the CBA please visit their website. (http://www.britarch.ac.uk/join )

As well as regional group membership, CBA membership also includes subscription to British Archaeology magazine, CBA Members' newsletters, Conservation newsletters, discounts to CBA events and other special offers.

The CBA have numerous activities. Some highlights include:

Young Archaeologists' Club

YAC is the only UK-wide club for young people aged up to 17 interested in archaeology. Members of YAC receive 4 issues of Young Archaeologist magazine each year with exciting articles and activities, as well as the 'YAC Pass' - free and reduced entry into many heritage sites across the UK, a membership card and certificate and badge.

British Archaeology magazine

British Archaeology is the CBA’s flagship magazine. It comes out six times a year, and its 68 pages are packed with news, features, reviews, gossip and opinion. It is available to CBA members and subscribers (from £21) and is also available to purchase in WH Smiths and other good newsagents.

Community Archaeology Forum

CAF provides an online meeting place for anyone involved with community archaeology. If you take part in or run a community project, are an archaeological professional involved in community work, or simply have an interest in this new and thriving sector of archaeology, CAF is the place for you.

We bring together resources and expertise to help projects get started, raise funding and learn the best archaeological techniques. There's also advice on where to archive the results of your project, and what resources to use to make the most of your research.

Festival of British Archaeology

The CBA's Festival of British Archaeology is an annual fortnight long extravaganza of heritage events, which takes place across the UK and has been running for over 20 years. Each year the Festival showcases the very best of British archaeology, with hundreds of special events organised and held by museums, local societies, national and countryside parks, universities, and heritage organisations across the UK. Events range from excavation visits and skills, to guided walks of local monuments, special talks, hands-on activities, finds identification days and lots more. The Festival presents everyone with the opportunity to learn about their local heritage, to see archaeology in action, and to get involved. It takes place every summer (16-31 July 2011).
