2010 AGM
The 2010 AGM was held on Saturday 3 July 2010 at the Community Classroom, Weoley Castle ruins, Alwold Road, Weoley Castle, Birmingham
After the AGM John Hemingway gave a talk on the lords of Dudley and Weoley Castle. After a break for lunch John Hunt gave a short talk on Weoley Castle and its context after which Mike Hodder lead a very informative tour of the site.
Weoley Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance. The ruins are over 700 years old and are the remains of the moated medieval manor house that once stood here. The site has been inhabited from the 12th century and, according to the Domesday Book, was part of the estate of William Fitz Ansculf. Excavations have revealed the wealthy status of the castle's occupants. Finds have included glass from Syria and a range of kitchen equipment. Weoley changed hands several times between 1485 and 1531 when it began to fall into disrepair. In the centuries that followed, stone from the castle was removed to build a nearby farm and the Dudley no.2 canal.
For those of you who were not able to attend the AGM the Weoley Castle Ruins will be open on Sunday 18 July from 1pm to 4pm as part of the Festival of British Archaeology.
Weoley Castle is right at the heart of a major residential area just off the B4121 near Bartley Green. There is plenty of on-street parking directly outside the gates. The number 29 bus runs straight past the ruins on Alwold Road but the 21 and 46 also stop very close by. The address of the site is Alwold Road, Weoley Castle, Birmingham B29 5RX.
