A better future for industrial sites and buildings
Regional day schools
Day schools are free of charge to CBA historic building volunteers. CBA can provide some assistance with travel costs, but we do ask that delegates book tickets early in order to take advantage of lower priced rail fares. Petrol costs will be refunded if receipts are provided.
The final AIA/CBA regional dayschool in the current programme on industrial heritage will be on 21 February 2011 at the Maritime Museum in Lancaster. Details will be available later in the year. Further events in Wales and Scotland are being planned for the future.
East Midlands
Thursday 11 November 2010 at Long Eaton Art Room, Granville Avenue, Long Eaton, Derbyshire
The East Midlands regional industrial heritage day school in November will focus on the hosiery and lace industries with a site visit in the afternoon to lace mills in Long Eaton around the Erewash Canal. The day starts at 9.30 am and finishes at 4.30 pm. The programme for the day is now available here. South East of England
Monday 5 July 2010 at the Percy Arms, Chilworth, Guildford, Surrey GU4 8NP
This regional industrial heritage day school will begin at 9.30 am and finish at 4.15 pm. The day will focus on legislation and the planning process and will consider gunpowder and paper mill sites during morning presentations and afternoon site visits. South West of England
Wednesday, 24 February 2010 in the XCentre, Commercial Road, Exeter EX2 4AD
This regional industrial heritage day school will begin at 9.30 am and finish at 4.30 pm. The day will focus on legislation and the planning process, particularly in relation to the former industries of the South West. An afternoon site visit will be made to the recently restored and converted Cricklepit Mill as well as a number of sites around the former Exeter quays and canal basin area, including warehouses, maltings and an electricity power station. North of England
Tuesday, 24 November in the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineering, Neville Hall, Westgate Road, Newcastle-on-Tyne
This regional industrial heritage day school will begin at 9.30 am and finish at 4.30 pm. The day will focus on legislation and the planning process, particularly in relation to the former industries of the North East. An afternoon site visit will be made to the Stephenson Quarter and the surrounding area, the area of Newcastle City Centre to the south of Central Station which contains surviving buildings from the former Robert Stephenson & Company Ltd, the world’s first purpose built locomotive factory and had been the subject of a recent extensive planning proposal. West Midlands
Thursday, 22 October 2009 at G F Williams Room, Ironbridge Institute, Coalbrookdale, Telford, Shropshire
This day school discussed legislation and the planning process, particularly in relation to the problems associated with the regeneration of large industrial structures. An afternoon site visit was made by coach to Ditherington, probably the first iron-framed building in the world, which began life as a flax mill but was converted into a floor maltings. Monday, 22 June 2009 at the London Canal Museum, east side of Battlebridge Basin, 12–13 New Wharf Road, London N1 9RT
This day school included discussion on canals, railways and coal, gasholders, and goods handling and hydraulic power, as well as legislation and the planning process. The full programme is available here (PDF | 115KB – AMENDED PROGRAMME 15/6/09).
Yorkshire and the Humber
Friday, 3 April 2009 at English Heritage, 37 Tanner Row, York, North Yorkshire
The second regional industrial buildings day school focused on legislation and the planning process, the form and function of industrial buildings, and considered public houses, railway buildings and the food processing industry. Afternoon visits included the former Terry’s chocolate factory offices and the National Railway Museum site. The full programme is available here (PDF | 79KB)
East of England
Monday, 23 February 2009 at The Waterfront Conference Centre, Old Custom House, Key Street, Ipswich, Suffolk

This first regional industrial buildings day school focused on legislation and the planning process and considered industrial buildings such as estate works buildings, maltings and maritime buildings with afternoon site visits to the docks area, to consider waterside buildings and maltings. Afternoon tours of the Oxford Mills Community taking in textile mill, workers’ housing and the Ashton Canal, conducted by Mike Nevell; and the Peak Forest Canal taking in the canal side, engineering sites and the Manchester and Sheffield Railway.
AIA/CBA day schools are funded by English Heritage.
