2009
- Nighthawking report released: Britain’s heritage is under threat from illegal metal detectorists, who face little chance of being caught, a report concludes (CBA 16 February 2009).
- First ever code of practice for Treasure Trove in Scotland: The new code is designed to ensure everyone involved in finding objects of archaeological, historical or cultural significance understands the procedures (CBA 12 February 2009).
- CBA leads an initiative to publish guidance on metal detecting rallies: A Guidance Note on metal detecting rallies has been agreed which makes important recommendations designed to limit the impact on the archaeological record (CBA 19 January 2009).
- CBA Director writes to Jack Straw regarding the Coroners and Justice Bill: The letter welcomes the announcement from the Ministry of Justice that the Coroners and Justice Bill will be in the Government’s legislative programme (CBA 14 January 2009).
2008
- CBA welcomes PAS news: The announcement of the positive review of the Portable Antiquities Scheme was welcomed by the CBA, which has been at the forefront of the campaign to support the Scheme (CBA 5 December, 2008)
- Review of the Portable Antiquities Scheme by Kate Clark for the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council was announced today, coinciding with the lauch of the Treasure Report 2005-6 at the British Museum. The new Culture Minister in England, Barbara Follett MP, announced that Kate Clark’s independent review had shown that there was a case for expanding the public funding of the Scheme (CBA 19 November, 2008).
- Government Response to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee Reports on the Draft Heritage Protection Bill and Draft Cultural Property (Armed Conflicts) Bill Cm7472. The Government reviewed and considered the comments and recommendations of the report, and has published its formal response. This joint response also includes the Government’s response to the CMS Select Committee’s report on the Draft Cultural Property (Armed Conflicts) Bill which was published on 22 July 2008 (DCMS 20 October 2008).
- Draft Heritage Protection Bill. The draft Heritage Protection Bill has been published for pre-legislative scrutiny. This is a draft Bill for England and Wales, which sets out the legislative framework for a unified and simpler heritage protection system that will be more open, accountable and transparent. The new system has been designed to provide more opportunities for public involvement and community engagement in understanding, preserving and managing our heritage (DCMS press release, 6 August 2008). 2007

- Heritage White Paper Praised: But Who Will Pay For It? (British Archaeology, No.94, May/June 2007)
- The Way the Treasure Act 1996 is Administered is Changing. The British Museum will provide certain services to the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport in relation to the performance of her functions under the Treasure Act. These services will include the valuation of treasure finds, the invoicing of museums, the payment of rewards and supporting the Treasure Valuation Committee. - 45% Increase in Number of Archaeological Finds Reported. New statistics reveal a huge increase in the recording and reporting of both Treasure and archaeological finds over the last few years.(DCMS Press Release, Jan 2007)
2006
- Cultural Property. The DCMS is responsible for protecting the nations cultural objects, our aim is to improve access for all by permitting and encouraging the highest quality works of art to remain and be displayed in the United Kingdom. (May 2006)
- Culture Minister Seeks Views On Improvements to the Treasure Service. Culture Minister David Lammy today launched a consultation to seek views on a number of changes to the Treasure Act 1996 Code of Practice – which would allow administrative responsibilities relating to the Act to be transferred from the DCMS to the British Museum. - The Goodison Review: Saving Art for the Nation is announced by the Treasury, to “…review the effectiveness and efficiency of support to regional and national museums and galleries to help them acquire works of art and culture of distinction that might otherwise be sold abroad, and to make those items accessible to the public” (HM Treasury, report published Jan 2004).
2002

- Treasure (Designation Order) 2002, expanding the definition of ‘Treasure’ and Treasure Act Code of Practice (Revised) (England and Wales) 2002 approved by House of Lords. - The Treasure Act Review Report and Recommendations are Published (2001). Direct PDF
- Wreck Amnesty Report - between 23rd January and 24th April 2001, the Receiver of Wreck held a “Wreck Amnesty” allowing the reporting of wreck held by private individuals and organisations which had not been previously been declared (as is required under Section 236 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995) to the Receiver. This is the final report of that amnesty, during which 4,616 reports were made corresponding to c30,000 individual items.

- The Number of Reported Treasure Finds has Increased Sevenfold Since New Laws were Introduced Over a Year Ago, Arts Minister Alan Howarth said today. In the first year of operation, 179 cases were reported compared to 25 a year under the old system. Thanks to the new law, many more archaeological items of great value were reported including Saxon and Roman coins, rings and brooches as well as pre-eminent items of religious symbolism.
