Archaeology and Education Conference 2008.

Getting Here.

The following provides directions to the York Campus of the York St. John University, please be aware that this is different to York University which has several campuses around York.

Follow the links below to jump to each section:

By road.

From A19 (Thirsk)
At the roundabout with A1237 (Outer Ring Road), take the second exit and follow directions for the city centre (about two and a half miles).
At Bootham Bar traffic lights turn left into Gillygate.
Go straight on at the next set of traffic lights, on to Clarence Street.
The University entrance is on your right.

From A19 (Selby).
Beyond Fulford Barracks, fork right into Cemetery Road following directions for the District Hospital.
When the city walls are directly ahead, turn right and follow the Inner Ring Road signs to Lord Mayor's Walk.
Turn right at the traffic lights at the far end of Lord Mayor's Walk, on to Clarence Street and the main University entrance is on your right.

From A64 (Leeds).
Fork left onto the A1036 (signposted York West).
Continue into the centre for about 3 miles.
At the traffic lights immediately after the Odeon cinema, turn left and follow the Inner Ring Road signs past the station.
After crossing the river turn left at the traffic lights.
Keep in the right hand lane past the Theatre Royal and at the traffic lights, go straight on into Gillygate.
Go straight on at the next set of traffic lights, on to Clarence Street.
The University entrance is on your right.

From A64 (Scarborough).
At the roundabout with A1237 take the second exit.
At the next roundabout take the first exit onto Malton Road, then the second exit at the next roundabout.
At the next roundabout take the third exit onto Heworth Green.
Take the second exit at the next roundabout onto Monkgate.
At the traffic lights turn right into Lord Mayor's Walk.
At the traffic lights at the end of Lord Mayor's Walk turn right, on to Clarence Street.
The University entrance is on your right.

From A59 (Harrogate).
At the roundabout with A1237, turn left onto the Outer Ring Road.
Continue to the roundabout with the A19 and turn right.
Follow directions as above for A19 Thirsk.

From A1079 (Hull).
Drive towards the city centre, turning right at Walmgate Bar traffic lights.
Follow the Inner Ring Road signs to Lord Mayor's Walk.
Turn right at the traffic lights at the far end of Lord Mayor's Walk, on to Clarence Street and the main University entrance is on your right.

Please note that the main University vehicular entrance is now on Clarence Street. There is pedestrian access from Lord Mayor's Walk, Garden Street and Clarence Street.

By rail.

It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to walk from the train station to the University.
If you get a taxi, the journey will take five-ten minutes (depending on traffic) and will cost Ł4.00 - Ł5.00 (December 2007).

Directions from York train station.

When you come out of the front of the train station turn left along Station Road.
Keep going straight on, cross over and continue straight on at the first set of traffic lights and proceed until you reach the next traffic lights.
Turn left and walk across Lendal Bridge.
At the next traffic lights, turn left again.
You will see the Theatre Royal on your right and the Art Gallery on your left.
Go straight on at the traffic lights and along Gillygate.
Go straight on at the next traffic lights, along Clarence Street and the University main entrance is on your right.

By air.

Manchester International Airport is approximately one and a half hours by road.
Leeds Bradford International Airport is approximately one hour by road.
An "aircoach" bus service opperates between Leeds-Bradford Airport and York train station, details of which can be found at www.yorkaircoach.com.

Car parking.

As we are a city centre campus, there is no parking on site except for visitors with a disabled badge.

There are two public car parks nearby - Monk Bar car park on St John's St and Union Terrace car park on Clarence St - both are just a few minutes walk from the University. Current charges (January 2008) for these are Ł2.60 for two hours, Ł3.90 for three hours, Ł5.50 for four hours and Ł7.00 for five hours.

If you park at the Union Terrace car park, you can buy a long stay ticket for all-day parking priced Ł9.50 (January 2008).

Park & Ride.

An excellent park and ride scheme operates in York. Full details can be found on the City of York Council website at www.york.gov.uk/transport/Parking/Park_and_Ride.

The fare (September 2008) is Ł2.30 return and up to two accompanied under 16s can travel free.
The nearest drop-off point to York St John is Museum Street which is on the Green Line from Rawcliffe Bar at the A19 (North) junction on the outer ring road (aprox 20 minutes on the bus).
All the other park and ride services have a drop-off point at York Train station and you can then follow the directions above to get to the University.

From the Museum Street drop-off point (Green Line from Rawcliffe Bar), walk down Museum Street, towards the Minster, turn left at the traffic lights, passing the Theatre Royal on your right and the Art Gallery on your left.
Go straight on at the traffic lights and along Gillygate.
Go straight on at the next traffic lights, along Clarence Street and the University main entrance is on your right.
The walk will take you approximately 10 minutes.
