Robert Kiln Trust Award

The Robert Kiln Trust award is given for the best project, or a series of works or projects, carried out in the UK by a voluntary body or individual.

Robert Kiln was a great believer in amateur participation. The Robert Kiln Charitable Trust, founded in the early 1970s, has distributed more than £1 million to conservation, the arts and archaeology. This award is meant to carry on Robert Kiln’s tradition of encouraging higher standards of fieldwork and excavation in the amateur ranks.

Any archaeological work is eligible, providing it has been completed in the last year, or is nearing completion. Projects in the UK done by voluntary archaeological societies or groups using professional help will be considered, as long as the work was done primarily by unpaid volunteers, or by professionals in a voluntary capacity.

The Trustees of the Robert Kiln Trust encourage applications for grants from all finalists towards the continuation or completion of their projects. In the past, judges have often visited applicants to review their work. Although time is limited for this year’s award, this is still a priority, so early applications are encouraged. There will be a small prize given at the Current Archaeology Awards, February 2010.

The final date for submissions is 15 November 2009.
