The William Lambarde (1536-1601) Memorial Fund

The Fund was established in 1968 as a result of a bequest to the Society by the late Mrs M M Lambarde. The income is to be applied for the provision of a travelling scholarship or travelling scholarships in archaeology or otherwise for the promotion of antiquarian studies . Applications should include a brief summary of the applicant’s qualifications and field of study and the names of two referees. The closing date for applications is 31 December each year. As a guide the total amount for distribution is unlikely to exceed £2,000.

Research bursary

The Society disburses substantial funds for the support of archaeological and documentary research within its fields of interest. Grants are of two types: Major Grants of up to £20,000 per year are awarded on an annual basis for a period not exceeding five years; and Minor Grants of sums up to £2,000 per year may be awarded annually for up to 3 consecutive years. A maximum of four research projects in receipt of a Major Grant will be supported by the Society at any one time and it is therefore unlikely that any more than one or two Major Grants will be available in any one year. The closing date for applications is 31 December each year.

Tessa and Mortimer Wheeler Memorial Fund

Established in memory of the late Mortimer Wheeler and the late Tessa Verney Wheeler as the result of a joint appeal by the British Academy and the Society of Antiquaries of London. The purpose of the Fund is to assist students of archaeology to gain experience in the field and grants will be made towards travel and other expenses. The closing date for applications is 31 December each year.

Joan Pye Awards

Through the benefaction of Miss Joan Pye, an award scheme has been established to assist scholars who have completed their post-graduate research degree (normally MPhil or PhD) within the last five years. The aim of the scheme is to assist further research work by excavation, survey or study, in the fields of prehistoric and Roman archaeology within the UK. The award(s) can be used to assist with work leading to publication. The closing date for applications is 31 December. Apply by letter.
