Liverpool Museum Field Archaeology Unit - The Liverpool Museums Field Unit is one of the longest established departments working in the north west of England. It began in 1977 as part of a Merseyside County service, initially with the support of Liverpool University. It then transferred to Merseyside County Museums. With the abolition of the county of Merseyside in 1986, the department became part of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside (now National Museums Liverpool). The field unit's remit since then has been to undertake archaeological research in the north west. This has involved excavations and field and aerial photographic surveys. These have produced evidence for a range of sites of all periods in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.
