Local government curators:
- Aberdeenshire Archaeology Service - Covers Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus. Maintains each Sites and Monuments Record for the three regions.
- Archaeology Service, Shropshire County Council
- Bedfordshire County Council Heritage and Environment Section - The section includes: County Archaeological Officer, Assistant Archaeological Officer, and Historic Environment Information Officer. We also have a Historic Buildings Officer. We provide the archaeological curatorial service for Bedfordshire (including county and district councils) and, by contract, for Luton UA. We have an SMR with historic buildings (the Historic Environment Record)
which we run for Bedfordshire.
- Birmingham City Council Conservation and the Historic Environment Section - Conservation and the Historic Environment Section includes the archaeology section, and the conservation team. Holds responsibility for maintaining the Sites and Monuments Record for Birmingham City.
- Boston Borough Council (Heritage Lincolnshire) - The Community Archaeologist for Boston Borough is employed at the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire (Heritage Lincolnshire). The Trust incorporates a Building Preservation Trust; manages a range of ancient monuments in Lincolnshire and publishes a range of popular books and booklets about the county's heritage. It runs the contractual company 'Heritage Lincolnshire - Archaeological Project Services' (APS). It also employs three community archaeologists for Boston Borough (Rebecca Wilcox), North Kesteven (Joanna Hambly) and South Kesteven (Gail Smith) - they also maintain the three areas' Sites and Monuments Records.
- Buckinghamshire County Archaeological Service - Responsible for the maintenance and development of Buckinghamshire's Archaeological Sites and Monuments Record, for developing policies for the management and conservation of archaeological remains and historic landscapes and providing related advice to local planning authorities and other organisations.
- Built and Natural Environment - Council curator (used to be known as Northamptonshire Heritage) responsible for archaeological heritage, and the Sites and Monuments Record within the county of Northamptonshire. Also provides a range of services and advice to a variety of people and organisations.
- Cheshire County Council Archaeology - Covers Cheshire, Halton and Warrington and maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for that area, including Chester City.
- Chester Archaeology - Covers Chester City and District providing services to the Planning Authority, development of heritage resources and provision (including information and outreach), research projects and post-excavation and publication. Carries out some limited contractual work.
- City of York Council
- Cumbria County Council Archaeology - Covers the region of Cumbria. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for that area. See also www.cumbria.gov.uk/learning_leisure_culture/heritage-history/.
- Denbighshire Countryside Service - Owns and manages various archaeological sites in the county; gives advice; carries out work on privately owned sites; runs a Young Archaeology Club; has a role within the planning system.
- Derbyshire County Council Countryside Services - Has responsibility for maintaining the county Sites and Monuments Record.
- Devon County Council Archaeological Group - Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for the county of Devon. Provides planning, conservation and management advice and undertakes aerial reconnaissance. Also provides regular input to the Devon Archaeological Society training programme.
- Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council Historic Environment Section - Maintains Dudley's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Dumfries and Galloway Council Archaeology Section - Curator for Dumfries and Galloway which covers the old counties of Dumfriesshire, The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and Wigtownshire. Responsible for maintaining the Sites and Monuments Record for that area.
- Durham County Council Archaeology Section - Covers the county of Durham and the borough of Darlington. Responsible for the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- East Sussex County Council: Archaeology Section - Responsible for the county's Sites and Monuments Record. Carries out appraisals for planning authorities and developers and offers advice.
- Edinburgh City Council Archaeology Service - Covers the city of Edinburgh. Responsible for the city's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Essex County Council Archaeology Section - Covers for the county of Essex. Responsible for the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
The Heritage and Conservation Branch is organised under four groups comprising:

- Exeter City Council Archaeology Section - Provides archaeological advice for the Exeter City Council area. Responsible for the Urban Archaeological Database which covers the historic core of the city. The outer part of the city district
is covered by the Devon County Sites and Monuments Record.
- Exmoor National Park Authority Archaeology Section - Curator for Exmoor National Park. The National Park Authority also maintains an historic environment database.
- Fife Council Archaeological Unit - Covers the county of Fife. Responsible for the Sites and Monuments Record in that area.
- Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust Ltd - Curatorial Division - One of the four regional Archaeological Trusts in Wales, established by government legislation in the mid 1970s. Provides a range of archaeological services and advice to the public and private sectors throughout south east Wales. The Division's main services involve development control, heritage management and public education. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for south east Wales - covers the twelve local authority areas of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Swansea, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan.
- Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service - Curator for Gloucestershire. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for the county. Also carries out some contractual work.
- Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit - Offers a variety of archaeological and heritage related services, such as archaeological planning advice, research and public access to archaeology.
- Hampshire County Council Archaeology Section - Covers the county of Hampshire. Maintains the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Herefordshire Archaeology - Curator for the county and city of Hereford. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for the area.
- Heritage Conservation Group - Curator for the county of Kent and Medway. Maintains the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Highland Council Archaeology Service - Curator for the Highlands of Scotland. Maintains the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Humber Archaeology Partnership - Joint archaeology curator service for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Kingston upon Hull City Council. Includes the Humber Sits and Monuments Record and Humber Field Archaeology contractual unit.
- Isle of Wight County Archaeology Service - Curator for the Isle of Wight. Maintains the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Lake District National Park Authority - Curator for the Lake District. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for that area.
- Lancashire County Archaeological Service - Curator for Lancashire. Maintains the area's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Leicester City Council Archaeology - Curator for the city of Leicester. Maintains the city's Sites and Monuments Record.
- Leicestershire County Archaeology Service - Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeological Planning.
- Lincoln City Council Heritage Section - Curator for City of Lincoln. Maintains the City's Urban Archaeological Database.
- Lincolnshire County Council Archaeology Section - Curator for the county of Lincolnshire. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for the county. The city of Lincoln, Boston Borough, North Kesteven District and South Kesteven District have their own curators for District level planning matters and community archaeology.
- Milton Keynes Council - Council curator responsible for archaeological heritage, and the Sites and Monuments Record within Milton Keynes.
- Newcastle City Council - Curator for the city of Newcastle. Maintains the city's Sites and Monuments Record.

- Western Isles Archaeological Service - Covers the whole of the Western Isles. Maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for that area.
- Winchester Archaeology Unit - Curator for the city of Winchester. Maintains the city's Sites and Monuments Record. Also carries out some contractual work.
- Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority - A reduced version of the full HER available though the ADS. This catalogue deals with records relevant to landscape features etc.
