The Engaging the Historic Environment – Continuing Education project examines the current state of play of archaeology within Continuing Education, and is the first time that such a detailed study has been undertaken for this sector. It is already clear that there has been a 60% fall in the number of archaeology courses in the past decade, from over 1300 in 1999 to just 500 this year. With a number of continuing education departments closing recently or in the very near future, this situation looks set to worsen. Already 2009 the Universities of Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Reading, and London’s City University have announced they will be closing their continuing education provision.
The project was designed by the CBA’s Head of Education Don Henson and is funded by English Heritage. The research is being carried out by Richard Lee who was appointed to the task in late 2007. A draft report will be available for consultation shortly.
