SCACE letter in THE

A letter from SCACE – Standing Conference in Archaeology – appears in today’s Times Higher Education supplement commenting on Lord Mandelson’s first education speech.

The SCACE group was recently reactivated, with some CBA assistance, in response to the problems facing archaeology in continuing education. To judge by Lord Mandeslon’s speech he appears to be unaware of these issues, and his speech seems to suggest that there is a need for something along the lines of what we already know of as continuing education. Lord Mandelson appears to be unaware of the fact that it is now largely his department (BIS) that is responsible for many of the issues currently facing continuing education and its serious decline in some parts of the country.

You’ll find our contribution on the letters page of the THE website, headed Kind Words, Dark Deeds.

An article outlining the present challenges facing continuing education can found in the current issue of British Archaeology (108). Advisory reading for Lord Mandelson perhaps!
