Setting of Heritage Assets Consultation Opens
English Heritage consults on the new ‘Setting of Heritage Assets’ guidance and launches the online application for designation.
As part of its heritage protection reform programme, English Heritage is consulting on its latest guidance document, The Setting of Heritage Assets. ‘Setting’ – as defined in the Planning Policy Statement 5 – means ‘the surroundings in which a heritage asset is experienced’ and which may make a positive or a negative contribution to its significance and to the ability to appreciate it.
The draft guidance emphasises that the heritage significance of places derives not only from their physical presence, but also from other attributes including their relationship with their surroundings. Its aim is to assist in the interpretation of this new and more inclusive approach to understanding setting. English Heritage is seeking feedback on the consultation draft which is available for download from English Heritage. Responses should be sent by email to setting or by post to Debbie Williams, English Heritage, 37 Tanner Row, York Y01 6WP. The closing date for responses is Friday 26 November.
Another recent development is the launch of an online application form for designation. This is the first time that applications to list, schedule or register a heritage asset can be submitted in a single format online. Early next year, a map based interface may be available which would allow the exact location and extent of the asset to be identified. See further details and application form also on the English Heritage website.
The CBA welcomes the accessibility this brings to the designation process so that local people can bring forward their own candidates for protection.
