4.4 Events

There were several kind words about National Archaeology Days, organised through the CBA and YAC with its range of activities and opportunities which appeal to both adults and children, in particular any hands-on element and of course re-enactments, and the similarly structured Scottish Archaeology Month, organised by Council for Scottish Archaeology. Heritage Open Days sponsored by Civic Trusts provide specific opportunities to appreciate the built environment. Nationally-sponsored events benefit, of course from national media coverage on which local organisations can build. One innovative idea was a Sites and Monuments Record open day. In some areas opportunities have been taken to link local archaeology in with other sponsored occasions such as community arts and photographic events and history fairs, or to form other links such as ‘Art in Archaeology’.
