YAC Survey 2009

In the summer of 2009 YAC HQ carried out a survey of its YAC UK members (the ones who get Young Archaeologist magazine) and of young people who are interested in archaeology but aren't members of YAC.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who filled out a survey, we received 302 responses from YAC UK members and 99 from non-members. Your answers have been really interesting and a great help to us in planning for the future of YAC.

We first asked everyone to tell us a bit more about themselves. Looking at the responses we found that slightly more girls than boys replied to our survey. Well done girls! You can see the amounts on the pie chart. We also asked you to tell us how old you are. You can see on the bar chart that most people are between the ages of 10 and 12, but we have interested people aged from just 4 years old to the ripe old age of 19!

Are you male or female How old are you?

Next we asked a little bit about why you like archaeology and why you like being a member of YAC. From your answers it is clear that most of our members joined YAC because they love archaeology or they want to be an archaeologist when they grow up.
Over half of you told us that you'd visited a real archaeological dig but about the same number of you said that you'd never actually been able to take part in a dig.

Why did you join YAC? Have you visited a dig?

We asked you to tell us the top three sites that you have visited over the past year. There were hundreds of different places that you named which shows us that our members really do enjoy visiting all sorts of sites all over the country!

The top three sites you said you have visited are:
1) Stonehenge
2) Hadrian's Wall
3) Warwick Castle
Remember if you want to visit some really interesting sites for free have a look at your YAC Pass booklet or click here.

We also wanted to know what you thought about belonging to YAC UK and whether you liked the magazine. We had some really nice replies saying how much you loved YAC. Thank you!
Your favourite page of the magazine is the Time Team page, closely followed by the competitions page. You can see what other pages of the magazine are popular on the bar chart underneath.
If you love Time Team why don't you have a look at issue 142 of Young Archaeologist magazine- it's a Time Team special.

Magazine Ideas

You gave us some great ideas for things that you'd like to see in Young Archaeologist magazine, some of which we've already done! We have tried to put more fun pages in the magazine including games and suggesting websites that we think you would like to visit.
We're also thinking about how we can make the magazine look better and how we can include the rest of your ideas. So keep your eyes peeled!
