Celebration Challenge 2009

The 2009 Celebration Challenge leaflet

YAC wanted to say thank you to Time Team for all that they have done for the Young Archaeologists' Club, as well as for archaeology in the UK and further afield, in their 15 plus years on TV. However, we couldn't do it on our own; we needed your help!

In 2009 YAC ran a nationwide competition asking you to design some fabulous gifts that could be presented to Time Team. You can find out more about the winning entries and the day we spent with Time Team here.

The Winning Entries

There were loads of brilliant entries and it was really hard picking winners. In the end YAC chose an amazing cake, made by Hannah from Yorkshire, as the winner in our 8-11 age category. The winner in the 12-16 age category was Olivia, from Hampshire, for her brilliant design for a jumper for Mick. Newcastle YAC Branch were the group winners for making a fantastic banner celebrating the relationship between YAC and Time Team.

A Day Out At Time Team

In October 2009 YAC HQ took the winners Hannah and Olivia, and two representatives from the Newcastle Branch, Ben and Stella, to a Time Team dig in Cambridgeshire so that they could present their gifts to the Team in person.

The site that the Team were digging was in a wood in Cambridgeshire. It was first discovered in 1825 by an archaeologist called Edmund Tyrell Artis. He found all sorts of Roman artefacts and even some buildings, but he never published a report and so the site was lost. Luckily for us, the site was rediscovered in 2005 by a Forestry Commision Wildlife Ranger and since then it has been investigated by Peterborough Museum and Northamptonshire Archaeology. Time Team were asked to investigate the site to find out more about what exactly it was.

After lunch our winners presented the Team with their gifts and Tony gave a speech saying how important he thinks YAC is.
The Team then disappeared and went back to work. We were given a guided tour of the site and our winners asked lots of questions about what the Team had been finding.

It was fascinating learning all about the site, as Olivia said:
"We learnt a lot about the trenches Raksha, Matt and Phil were digging and how widely distributed their Roman building was... but the unanswered question was still 'villa or no villa?' - we'll have to wait and see."

Before we left to go home our winners had a go at some finds washing. They were armed with tooth brushes and washing-up bowls of cold water and given trays of Roman finds to wash. Just before leaving everyone had time to tuck into a piece of the winning cake and pose for some photos with the Time Team landrover!
